Oblivion, Therefore I Am
“Habitus is linked closely to cultural capital and might be said to proceed from it. Habitus is created by an interplay between social structures, including the family, and individual will or choice.” - Bourdieu 1984
According to Bourdieu, “Habitus” is caused by the fact that we are thrown into a particular community regardless of our will. Individual judgment, choice, and taste seem to be made consciously on the surface, but they are possible to be created by internalized rules of the community. This is why Bourdieu defined habitus as a "structured structure" and at the same time a "structuring structure." A person exposed to a social system and culture for a long time is more likely to have a rigid ego. The ego thus secured is deprived of the will and opportunity to explore the self. Instead, it fully accepts the character endowed by the cultural style and is transformed into a state that is wholly identical to all others and that others expect of themselves. Such people live a life led by the desire of 'the Other'. A human being dominated by ‘learned memories’ are unable to change by themselves unless they are externally stimulated. Besides, those who naturally consider following the social myths are difficult to recognize the risks by themselves. Even if the problem is recognized, the individual does not want to deviate from the conventions of the system. For it means to break away from a comfortable and complacent life.
My previous work, “Deconstructive Mind”, was a process of accepting a part of ‘I’ which had denied in my life and deconstructing my self-image created by ‘the Other’. However, The rigid ego, which is only an image that I want to be seen by others, is harder than I think and sticks to me. No, I did not want to get rid of it. Am I just obsessed with the image as 'I'? I was strongly convinced that being obsessed with the image of 'I' could not escape from cultural memories. Habitus is a kind of habit (the word, Habitus is the etymology of habit). Bourdieu defines this habit not as a ‘personal’, but as a ‘social, class, group, and historical' concept. The individual embodies Habitus, these classes, and social habits. Based on this habit, an individual’s social practice occurs. From Bourdieu's point of view, an individual's social practice does not arise from his reason and subjective judgment, but from social habits embodied in his class and group, that is, collective and class unconscious. After all, Habitus is nothing more than a habit of being dominated by cultural memories.
Oblivion. It is a process of releasing me from the deep self-identity of consciousness arising from the social and cultural customs and memories of which I am accustomed to for a long time. It is another form of anxiety made out of cultural memories. I would like to forget ‘I’ that others believe as I am. My work begins with dismantling the habits that securely held me like glue, and it breaks down expectations and appreciation for those familiar things. It is an attempt to reject the senses and thoughts created in culture and social system.

내가 선택하는 대부분의 순간에 나를 지배하는 강력한 힘이 '학습된 사고와 불안'에 의한 결정이라는 것을 깨달은 지는 그리 오래되지 않았다. 그것이 현실적 이익을 가져다주는 의식적 개입으로 이루어진 선택이었든, 무의식 깊은 곳의 명령이었든지 간에 나의 사고의 기준이 '타자'(사회)라는 외적대상에 향하고 있었던 것은 부인할 수가 없다. 그 과정에서 나는 내적 진실을 외면했기 때문에 ‘나’는 여기에 있으면서 저기에 있는 ‘허구적 자아’만 바라보고 있었던 것이다. 그 둘의 간극이 크면 클수록 나는 모순되고 고통스러웠다.
“아비투스는 사회화되고 구조화된 육체이자, 특정한 장의 내재적 구조들을 내화한 육체이다. 그것은 세계에 대한 지각과 그 속에서의 행동을 구조화하는 육체다. 특정한 개인의 몸속에 체화된 것이기 때문에 개별적인 동시에 그 개인이 놓여 있는 사회적 위상의 반영이라는 점에서 사회적인 것이기도 하다.”-삐에르 부르디외
부르디외의 지적이 옳다면 아비투스는 우리가 자신의 뜻과 무관하게 특정한 공동체에 내던져 길러졌기 때문에 생긴 것이다. 개인의 판단, 선택, 취향 등은 표면적으론 의식적으로 이루어지고 있는 것처럼 보이지만, 사실 그것은 내면화된 공동체의 규칙에 의해 가능하지는 것이다. 부르디외가 아비투스를 구조화된 구조(structured structure)이며 동시에 “구조화하는 구조”(structuring structure)라고 정의했던 것도 바로 이런 이유에서이다.
하나의 사회 체제와 문화에 오랜 시간 노출될수록 자아는 경직되기 쉽다. 그렇게 고착된 자아는 또 다른 자신의 모습을 탐구할 의지와 기회를 박탈당한다. 그 대신 문화적인 양식에 의해 부여되는 성격을 완전히 받아들이고, 다른 모든 사람들과 전적으로 동일한 그리고 다른 사람들이 그 자신에게 기대하는 그런 상태로 변화된다. 타자의 욕망이 이끄는 삶을 살아가고 있는 것이다. 그들의 사회 체제가 견고하고 그 문화에 익숙할수록 자유에의 저항은 심해지고 개인과 사회 공동체 사이의 존재에 대한 혼동은 가중된다. ‘나’로서 존재할 수 없는 자아는 영적인 공허함을 느끼게 된다. 이 학습된 ‘기억’에 지배당하면 인간은 외부의 자극을 받지 않는다면 스스로 변화하기 어려울 뿐만 아니라, 그 사회의 통념을 따르는 것을 당연히 여기는 사람들은 그 위험을 인지하는 것 자체가 어렵다. 왜냐하면, 일단 그 사회의 환경에 포섭되면 체제 자체를 성찰할 수 있는 비판적 역량은 소진되어, 우리는 그 위험을 심각한 문제로 간주하지 않기 때문이다. 설령, 그 문제성을 인지하더라도 개인은 체제의 관습에서 벗어나는 것을 원치 않는다.
“경험주의는 단지 사건들과 타자들만을 인식하며, 그러므로 위대한 개념들의 창조자일 수 있다. 경험주의의 힘은 주체를 정의하는 계기로부터 유래한다. 그에 따르면 주체란 아비투스, 습관, 다시 말해 내재적 장에서의 습관, '나'라고 이야기하는 습관에 지나지 않는 것이다.” -질 들뢰즈
나의 전작 ‘Deconstructive Mind’는 내가 살면서 부정해왔던 자아의 일부분을 수용하고 ‘타자’에 의해 만들어진 나의 자아 이미지를 해체하는 과정이었다. 하지만, 스스로 품고 있는 타인에게 보여 지고 싶은 이미지일 뿐인 고정된 자아는 생각보다 더 단단하게 굳어졌고 나에게 달라붙어 쉽게 떨어지지 않았다. 아니, 떨어지길 원하지 않았다. 나는 가만히 어딘가에 그리고 타인의 눈에 비친 나를 바라본다. 나는 그저 ‘나’라는 상像Image에 집착했던 것은 아닐까? ‘나’를 표현하기 위해서는 내가 있어야, 즉 ‘나’를 소유하고자 하는 마음이 컸던 것은 아닐까? 자아에 대한 소유욕이 커질수록 나는 초조하고 불안해졌다. 내가 아닌 나의 모습을 상상하기가 힘들었다. 여전히 나는 나를 놓기가 싫었던 것이다. ‘나’란 이미지에 대해 집착한다는 것은 사회적으로 ‘학습된 기억’에서 나 스스로 벗어나지 못하고 있다는 강한 확신이 들었다. 나 스스로, 주변 사람들에게, 더 나아가 이 사회에서 받아들여지는 적정한 선의 경계에서 결코 그것을 뛰어넘을 시도조차 하지 못했다는 것을 스스로 인정했다. 그것의 밑바탕에는 불안이 뿌리 깊이 존재하고 있었다. 그것 조차도 사회에 의해 만들어진 ‘학습된 불안’이라는 생각에 이르렀다. 절벽 끝에 서보니 비로소 내가 허위의 나를 붙잡고 매달리고 있었다는 것을 알게 되었다.
망각, 그것은 오랜 시간동안 나에게 익숙한 사회와 문화적 관습과 그 기억으로부터 생긴 깊은 ‘의식의 자기동일성’ 으로부터 나를 해방시키기 위해 자의식을 비워내는 과정이다. 내가 표현하는 작업들은 망각을 위한 시도임과 동시에 삶의 여정이다.
